Navigating waves with unusual materials.

These are our beautiful little sailing ships made from a 50 cent piece, wine cork, 2 toothpicks, and coloured paper triangles (for the sails). And here is the first verse of the traditional Christmas song:

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day in the morning.

We made lots more sailing ships and did some serious testing in the bathtub. The 50 cent piece creates a perfect stem on which the wine cork balances and floats.

Ps. If you fancy making a cork sailing ship you will also need a good cutting knife to slot the 50 cent into the cork!
